Dig deep
I needed to rename several subdirectories of files and, of course, I'd be dumb to do that manually. A quick Google and bingo:

Soccer Classics
I woke up at an unholy 4 am to watch the Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan (BBC report). With Liverpool having defied all odds in their run to the final, I was betting on a match that would be considered a classic in years to come. Damn, I love it when I get it right once in a rare while. When do you get a chance to see, live, an underdog score 3 goals in a span of 6 minutes to tie the game, see their goalkeeper fumble balls yet make two freak miracle saves and provide one of the most entertaining penalty keeping performances ever? The odd thing is that Liverpool might be the first champion who won't be able to defend it next year.
Sidenote: I still remember the Heizel-drama and today's fan behavior and on-field sportsmanship was very positively different, so maybe humans do learn from mistakes.

Profile your Mac in XML
MacOSX comes with a System Profiler application, but there's also a command-line version that allows you to get only specific details and output them as XML:
system_profiler -xml SPDiagnosticsDataType
See 'man system_profiler' for more details.
Mounting online disk images
This tip's from the venerable Brad Choate. You can mount online disk images directly, instead of downloading first. Say, there's a new version of ecto and you want to install it. Type this in the terminal:
hdiutil attach http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/ecto2.dmg
and it'll mount the diskimage. Pretty cute.

No wonder you lost the gig - that's the worst data construct I've ever
seen. A hash of subroutines of fileglobs of array references to hashes
of bang line subroutines? That's just WRONG!!!
It's the music...
Neilio decided to waste my time and I have no choice but obey. Passing along his musical baton, I thus write:
Total volume of music files on my computer:
3.75 GB, 712 songs, enough to drive me nuts for 2.1 days.
The last CD I bought was:
Damn good question. I actually cannot remember, but I *think* it may have been “UFO Romantics” (Guitar Wolf), although that was a present for my cousin.
Song playing right now:
moana from the album “Deftones” by Deftones.
Five songs I listen to a lot, or that means a lot to me:
According to iTunes I dig:
- How Near How Far - ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
- Wild - Cell
- Dig Deep - Cell
- Schizophrenia - Sonic Youth
- Transona (live) - Stereolab
More statistical music nonsense is available on my Audioscrobbler page.
Five people to whom I’m passing the baton:
Now, back to coding...

Blogging friends
A friend from a past long ago has taken up blogging. I've
known Mark since my
England years. If I remember correctly, and my memory's as rotten as a
pile of natto, he was studying in Exeter, wrestling the same tough topics
in Cognitive Science. That's how we crossed paths, I think. Once Mark and
a Belgian friend hitched a ride in my ancient Volkswagen Polo on a car
trip back to our respective family homes for a Christmas break. Ancient is
actually an understatement. The car was so old, I'm still amazed it
survived the hours long trek from Southampton via Leuven to Holland. When
it rains, the car would slowly fill up with water. Seriously. It had a
cassette player that was a bit funky and, according to Mark, it gave
Primus an even more unique sound. But at least it worked. Anyway, it was a
fun trip and you just cannot beat any trip that includes Belgian beers and
fries.
Anyway, Mark's been productive in his blogging and even shows a knack for comic drawing I didn't know he had (click the image to see the full version). And damn, he knows how to rant.
