Session # 1  January 6, 2003 ~ Monday

Today, we learned the procedures for logging. We will use the same procedures everyday. We will be using Netscape Communicator later on, but because of a couple of glitches, we are to log on to Internet Explorer. Here we located the Brandon University web site. This is also where the bulletin board for the class can be found. In it, the daily agenda, daily webzines, tutorials, and other need-to-know activities can be found.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels
 Reflections: DAY 1
My First Day On Campus

Initially, I was quite scared to come back to school. It had been five years since I had last been in school and I thought I might have waited too long to try and come back and further my education. I thought I was too old and everyone around me would be a lot younger than I was. I was quite relieved when I came in that first day and saw a few familiar faces, faces that were as old as I was.

The next thing I was quite impressed with on my first day back was that the Professors recognized that there were a lot of students that had been away for some time and all of them started fresh from the get go and made provisions for these students. I also received help from a lot of other students like Renee Beaudry. I could not imagine getting through school without her.

Session 2: January 7, 2003 ~ Tuesday

Today we learned how to cut/copy/paste both text and URLs. We also learned how to multi-task so that we have various things all opened at the same time and can quickly access them if we need them or if using more than one program for a single purpose.                                                                                                                                                                              Helps & Hints: To copy and paste, left click and drag across text or URL you want to copy, right click and click on copy. Move to where you want to paste it, right click and click on paste.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

I am finding that the second semester is going to be a lot harder than the first. Everything seems to be go, go, go. All of the Profs expect you to be starting projects and assignments already, when some people are still trying to figure out their class schedules. The education office does not help either, they place you in different slots than you signed up for and fail to notify you. There is nothing worse than starting school and not knowing where or when you have class. I think it is time for the Ed. office to take this course so that things are not so mixed up every semester. I can only think of the saying, "Do as I say, but not as I do." They want us to have this course, which is great, but then they want to do everything analog.

Session 3: January 8, 2003 ~ Wednesday

Today we learned a little bit on email and how we can use similar procedures from last class to copy and paste articles we want to send to someone. We also learned that we can transfer work from home to Bu and vice versa.
Helps and Hints: There is a whole new language to consider when using email, so you have to learn some etiquette and watch what you write. Avoid flaming.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

DON'T GIVE OUT THE WRONG MESSAGE WHEN YOU EMAIL. People think you are yelling at them and it is considered rude. I also find people who find it necessary to talk loudly about nothing in the computer lab rude. I like it nice and quiet when I work, especially when I'm under the gun. I don't want to hear about how wasted someone was when I'm trying to write a paper. I think the rules in the library should apply to the computer lab also.

Session 4: January 9, 2003 ~ Thursday

Today we sent our first emails, one to our prof and one to our neighbor. We also discussed Web pages and how we can use them for personal portfolios and daily assignments. We also got our first homework assignment, a booklet all about what you are reading know, BLOGS. These are an integration of what we did in class, our personal reflections for that day, and interesting web sites you might want to visit that I have found interesting.
Helps & Hints: To change the color of your text, highlight the text you want to change, click on the black square on your toolbox and choose a color.

Session 5: MONDAY ~ January 13, 2003

Today we got our photos taken that will eventually be up on our personal web pages. We also took a look at Web log pages and a template that we can copy and paste to make our entries simple. Starting today, I can transfer my blog entries that I have been saving in word and transfer them over to my blog page.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

I'm computer illiterate, but I look forward to computer class because I know I'm going to learn something new and useful each class. Today I sent an Email to Mr. Hillman which was nothing new, but it also included a web site that he could search that I found interesting. This is something I didn't know how to do, so I was quite proud of myself. I also took a Curriculum Navigator course last Friday and I found it quite useful. You can get everything you need from outcomes to assessment. It can be found at below at web sites visited.

Today we learned a lot more about email including sending multiple copies, saving your message to send later, sizing, reply, reply to all, forwarding, spell check, more etiquette, and cut and paste incoming mail. We also made a bio (below) to send to a neighbor and to the professor.
Helps & Hints: If you make a mistake somewhere and you can't delete it, go to Edit on your tool bar and press undo. This will "undo" your last task. To do this even faster, press Ctrl z to do the same.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

The details of my life are quite inconsequential, but if you must know, I was born and raised in Brandon and have never lived anywhere else.  I went to high school at Vincent Massey and graduated from there in 1994.I am the middle child of five siblings and am considered as one of those kids that fell through the cracks in my upbringing.

I enjoy playing a variety of sports including golf, volleyball, and hunting squirrel. I belong to the Kinsmen Club for which I have served on the executive committee at various levels, and currently sit on the Kinsmen Village board.

I own a computer at home which I mostly use for assignments for education, but also for educating my three year old son. I have used most of the programs it offers. I am not comfortable with computers, but through my computer course, have become a lot more aware of them.  I don't even have an off campus email address because I can't afford to have Internet access at home. If I do browse the Internet at school, it is likely to be class related or the Wheat Kings home page, as I am a huge fan. That is about the extent of my computer knowledge. I don't participate in chat rooms, have my own web page, or program by any means. This plethora of ignorance does not, however, reflect my willingness to learn them.

Today we learned how to send an attachment when emailing. We fine tuned our BIO and attached it to an email we sent to our prof.
Helps & Hints: Go onto the Netscape Communicator icon and then hit the Netscape composer button on the bottom right-hand side of your screen to start your own web page.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

The main agenda today was to learn how to send and attached file when emailing someone. Again, I puffed out my chest when this occurred, as this was also something new for me. I also set up my first web page and called it Curtis’ Crazy Web Page. I think it takes a lot of genius to come up with such interesting titles. I’ll probably get millions of hits tonight with such provocative wording. I also changed the background to red, which really put it over the top. Netscape Navigator makes this quite easy, which will be useful for the children we teach.

Session 8: Thursday ~ January 16, 2003

Today we explored the potential of Web mail. This way you can monitor your incoming e-mail while off campus. All you need is your logon user name and password. We also created our first web page using Netscape Composer.
Tip: If you want to increase the text on the entire screen so you can read it easier while in Netscape, just press Ctrl] and the screen will be magnified to whatever setting you want.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

Today, we got our first look at our pictures that we will be using for our web pages and that, and I am once again reassured that I look like a dork. On the positive side, I learned a great deal in class about formatting and using tools for composing a web page. I also found out how to monitor incoming e-mail while off campus using web mail, which is just fantastic.

Session 9: Monday, January 20, 2003

Today we learned how to format our web log pages so that we can start transferring over our reflections, journal, and hints onto our web log. The key element we learned today was setting up tables to separate information within our web log and made a template of the daily web log so that we can just paste a new template on each day to simplify our log.
Helps & Hints: There are a lot of tricks and viruses out there, so be careful what you open, especially attachments. For more info, see sites visited.

Reflection

I now have the large task of transferring over my blogs from word into the web log form. This will involve moving eight days of notes, reflections, hints, and web sites over, which seems a little redundant. If we only used our blogs from today, I don't think a whole lot will be lost. I'm sure twenty-two blogs would be a good testament that we understand how they work.

We did a skills survey and sent it to Bill via Email. We then edited the survey into paragraph form to put into our blogs.
Hint: If you want to transfer an entire document or change the entire format someway, an easy way to do it is to go to Edit on the tool bar and click on Select All. If you want to transfer the entire document go to Edit again and click on copy. Then paste it wherever you like.

The following is a piece of my skills survey we did in class. I hope to comeback and change this survey as I progress through this course.
I understand the basic function of computer hardware components, such as central processing unit, monitor, keyboard, printer, and disk. I can find and launch specific software programs and navigate between programs. I can save work to both the hard disk and floppy disk. I can exit/quit an application and/or shutdown computers properly.

Session 11: Wednesday, January 22, 2003

Today we made our index page for our web page. We also learned how to import a photo and put it on our page.
Hint: Check the history of where your computer has been by clicking on the arrow down button on the right hand side of the location box.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels
The computers in school are ridiculously slow as of late, which is really frustrating trying to get these blogs done. Every time I hit a button I have to wait before it will come up on my screen. I try to change something in the mean time and it screws up what I was initially trying to do. When it is like this I don't have the patience to elaborate in my blog, so this is all you are going to get.

Today we learned how to hot link a sight on our web page so that when someone clicks on a particular heading or picture, it goes directly to that site.
We also transferred previously written blog material over into our web page from Word.
HELPS & HINTS: Remember its and it's are two different words – know how to use them!
To make a hot email address copy and link, write mailto: and the site

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels
I think I must have down loaded something I shouldn't have, because this computer is driving me nuts. I wish I knew more about them so I could solve this problem, but I don't. I wonder if it has anything to do with the virus that was spread down in the states over the weekend? I'm so close to catching up on my blogs, but if it remains this slow I'll be here until my son graduates from university.

Helps & Hints: To put up a "pop", right click on the image, left click on image properties, click on ALT. Text, and write in what you want it to say.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels
The first exam in computers is next Monday, so I have to know how to get to a particular web site, copy a selection, and send it to Bill via email. This computer is still messed up, so I'm signing off.

Session 14: Tuesday, January 28, 2003

Today was GRAPHICS DAY. We learned how to save pictures in our "picpool" file and save them so they worked with our programs properly. To do this, copy and paste pictures to our picpool folder and right click on the picture. Press "Save image as" and rename the picture in small case, less than eight letters, and no spaces.
We then learned how to edit our pictures in MS-Office Photo Editor. To get there, go to Start, Student Aps, MS-Office, and Photo Editor. Here we can cut the picture or change the size etc. easily and save it to picpool.
Hint: When saving pictures, change the name to something you remember with:
No more than 8 lower case letters or numbers... no spaces... no special characters

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

I dumped ninety percent of my files and emails today, got rid of elaborate pictures out of these blogs, and deleted most of my folders in an effort to speed up this ridiculous computer, but it didn't help. If I hit the backspace button, sometimes it takes over a minute to respond. This paragraph took me ten minutes. Where is that #$%^!* tech guy to fix this thing.

Session 15: Wednesday, January 29, 2003

Today we learned how to put our composed pages onto the internet. First, You have to go the Start box and go to Student Lab Apps. Find the WS-FTP bar and click on it. In the right hand box find Wint-03 and Chngdrcry. From this find your folder and all of your files in composer will show up in the left hand box. To transfer particular pages or photos over, click on title and then click on the arrow over button pointed at the right hand box. This transfers composed pages onto the net.
Helps & Hints: Anytime you change a page in composer you have to go back to this page and transfer the changed document over. To see the changes, find the page and hit RELOAD and the changes should be evident.

Reflections integrating personal & professional philosophy with my day's Web travels

I think this computer is a little better. It seems to pause sometimes, but not as often. I might actually be able to get something done in this course. Never mind, it's doing it again. Backspacing triggers the break quite often or moving to a different location on the page to change something. Cut and paste takes a while too. When it auto saves it breaks for a long time and it sometimes interrupts when I hit the spacebar.
