WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

An employer shall ensure that a worker who works with, or in proximity to, a controlled product is informed about the hazards associated with that product and the ways to protect him/her self and others from the dangers. WHMIS is a hazard communication system designed to make this information available for workers. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that workers under their direction are trained in WHMIS and workers are responsible for participating in this training. This generic WHMIS training is offered by DHSE to assist supervisors with this legislated training requirement. Supervisors must supplement the generic training with site specific training. Employees who work in laboratories are required to take the LabSafety training course, which includes a WHMIS component. If you work in a laboratory environment, contact the Chemical Safety Manager prior to registering. Employees should contact their supervisor with questions about their individual training requirements and supervisors are invited to contact the Chemical Safety Manager for training requirement clarification. This course is offered to University employees only.
