SHAFER VINEYARDS, CALIFORNIA
(In Bond Offer)

California - Various Producers.

A printer-friendly version of this page is available here

Updated 27 Oct 2002. Founded in 1979, Shafer Vineyards is situated in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, east of the Silverado Trail and just north of the town of Napa. Although their main focus has always been luxuriant, richly textured Cabernet Sauvignons from their Stags Leap vineyards, father and son John and Doug Shafer also own and farm vineyards throughout Napa Valley and Carneros. Low fertility, hillside sites have always been a major priority, as has the adoption of the finest, low vigour rootstocks and clones, leading to extremely low yields of small intensely concentrated grapes. They are also passionate exponents of sustainable farming practices in which they eschew all forms of chemical sprays and their vineyards teem with natural predators including bats, owls, and a variety of insects. The resulting raw materials are of the highest quality and provide them with numerous, stylistic options in the winery. Winemaking, in the hands of Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, also follows a similar philosophy of allowing the fruit full expression and with a minimum of intervention.

The following releases comprise mainly the 1998, 1999 and also 2000 vintages. Similar, in that they were atypically cool and late, the wines are characterised by exquisite fruit definition, purity, elegance and length. Of course, they are still marked by the concentration, richness and intensity one associates with Napa Valley's finest properties.

(Prices are UNDER BOND DELIVERED to Scotland per dozen bottles 75cl or per dozen half-bottles 37.5cl or per six magnums 150cl - where halves and magnums are available)

For full terms please see below. Further information on these vintages and also on all our wines is available on request.

2000 Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay

per 12/1 £249.00

From Shafer's superbly sited, eponymous vineyard in the Napa Valley side of Carneros. It is 100% barrel fermented, with wild yeast, for 14 months in a combination of 2/3 French oak, 1/3 American oak (50% new). Malolactic fermentation is prevented and, as a result, the richly textured, intensely flavoured, concentrated fruit is beautifully supported by pure, vibrant acidity.

2000 Merlot 75cl

per 12/1 £237.00
2000 Merlot 37.5cl per 12/1 £126.00
2000 Merlot 150cl MAGNUMS per 6/1 £246.00
1999 Merlot 75cl per 12/1 £258.00
1999 Merlot 37.5cl per 12/1 £138.00

Aged for 20 months in a combination of Allier and Troncais barrels (40% new). Both 1999 and 2000 were long, cool growing seasons and, as a result, the wines, whilst plush and luscious, shows excellent intensity, finesse and restraint.

1998 Hillside Select 75cl

per 6/1 £486.00

For many years Hillside Select has been one of California's greatest red wines. It is produced from carefully selected blocks surrounding the winery (The Sunspot, John's Folly & Bench blocks) exclusively in the Stags Leap District. 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 32months in 100% new Alliers and Troncais barrels.

1999 Cabernet Sauvignon

ARAUJO ESTATE (Eisele Vineyard), NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
There is very little introduction required for this great estate, guardians and owners of one California’s greatest terroirs “Eisele Vineyard”. These are sensational wines, world-class and have wonderful purity and finesse. The Cabernet is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon , 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot. For the first time a second wine has been produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon called “Altagracia” and is excellent value and first-rate. The Syrah is remarkably fine and similar to top-flight top Cote-Rotie and includes 6% Viognier from Eisele Vineyard which is co-fermented with the Syrah, The Sauvignon Blanc, which also includes 6% Viognier, is very classy and complex. It includes a part which is fermented in new oak and which is blended with the proportion fermented in stainless steel resulting in a fresh, vibrant and well-defined wine with excellent Sauvignon Blanc varietal character yet also has excellent balance and complexity.
