On July 1, a 19-year-old front desk clerk reported to the Sheriffs Department that Kobe sexually assaulted her. Also on July 1, Kobe underwent knee surgery. On July 4, an arrest warrant was issued for Kobe by local Sheriff Joe Hoy. Kobe flew back to Colorado, surrendered, posted a $25,000 bond, and was released.

On July 18, 2003, a felony sexual assault charge was filed against Kobe by local District Attorney Mark Hurlbert. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
