Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon Synopsis

Ron Perlman is wonderfully cast as an Insouciant, Surly Antichrist-with-a-heart-of Gold, and he provides a solid cornerstone to a sharp and wittily scripted film which admittedly doesn't have many shocks but does have more heart than anything George Lucas or Steven Spielberg have churned out in the last decade or more. That the film is a labour of love between Guilliermo del Toro (Dorector) and Mike Mignola (Creator) shows clearly throughout and the fanboy enthusiasm which they've infused the film warmed my notoriously chill and flinty heart. Okay, so the ending is a bit quick and something of a cop out: 1) Lovecraft increasingly has a lot to answer for, and 2) I'm sure Cthulhu is tougher than that and there are some inconsistencies in the narrative if you really want to go looking for them, but, for me, the cheery, gung-ho enthusiasm of the whole thing carried me through my box of popcorn very comfortably indeed.
The basic story is the pretty cool though: Some Nazi's try to call forth a God, instead they get a red/ape/child thing, called Hellboy (you'll notice in the photo, all the soldiers have turned catholic). Then we go to Myers who arrives at the B.P.R.D. (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense( When they say research, they mean go and beat it up)) and meets Ape Sapien (mer-man psyhic dude (not in the comics)), and Professor Broom (Hellboy's 'father'). Then he meets Hellboy ('Don't look at the horns') and they go fight some monsters. By the way, Hellboy's in love with pyrotechnic Liz Sherman (Selma Blair). It's funny in places. It's a good story idea, very similar to the comics, as the different elements of the comics have been moulded, juggled around and made into a movie plot-line. Hellboy's great one-liners and cocky attitude do border on annoying, but he's cool. The sword-guy is really cool and Ilsa is just stupid. Other than a few faults, this film is a great fnatasy flick and i loved it! If you're into fantasy, go watch it, because it's great.

How this film came to be licensed for those over the age of twelve beats me, it is only suitable for those UNDER the age of twelve. A mental age of 12 or under will also do.
