Carly Patterson won her first U.S. junior
all-around title this past summer, but she is already considered a
leading prospect for the 2003 World Championships and 2004 Olympic
Games.
Throughout 2002, Patterson has enjoyed a streak of impressive
performances. Earlier this year, she competed well three times in
Canada, where she won three individual gold medals in the junior
division at the Pacific Alliance Championships; the all-around title
at the Jurassic Classic; and the all-around title in the junior
division at the Gymnix International.
In August, the Louisiana native improved upon her 2001 bronze
medal by winning the all-around gold at the U.S. Junior
Championships in Cleveland, by a margin of 0.625 points.
Later that month, she was a member of the winning team at the
T.J. Maxx International Challenge (USA vs. the World) in Anaheim -
an exhibition-style competition that included veterans such as
Svetlana Khorkina, Verona van de Leur, Daniele Hypolito, and
two-time U.S. senior champion Tasha Schwikert.
In October, Patterson led the U.S. team to first place at the
Brazilian International Tournament (USA vs. Brazil vs. Ukraine),
where she again won the all-around title.
Read about Patterson's performance at the 2002 U.S. Junior
Championships in the October 2002 issue of International
Gymnast Magazine, which features Patterson on the cover.
Patterson is also on the cover of the March 2002 issue.
